Siamese Cats

Siamese were one of the first cat breeds to be recognised from an oriental background, though where they come from is widely unknown though some believe they originate from Southeast Asia from the temple of sacred cats of Siam. This area is now part of Thailand, where the breed is known as Moon diamond'; during the 20th century Siamese cats have become hugely popular in North America and through-out Europe.

Modern Siamese cats cut a very elegant, muscular and stylish figure; their head is triangular with a thin snout. Their eyes tend to be an almond shape and their ears are large and thin, which are all in proportion to their long body. Their coat also tends to be short, smooth, glossy and fine; they tend to have dark patches around their eyes, ears, nose, tails and feet. When they are first born all Siamese kittens look the same being either white or cream, when they reach the age of four they will have developed the darker patches on their coat. In general as a Siamese cat gets older their fur tends to darken, it is also found that Siamese cats living in warmer climates will have a finer coat than those living in cooler climates.

Siamese are known for having a very social nature which means that they are best suited to someone who isn't out all day every day, they are a cat that enjoys being with other sociable cats and so they are a great pet to have if you already have pets. They are very affectionate cats and they find a very strong bond with their owner, they are very intelligent cats. In general Siamese cats are known for being quite extrovert, however there are some who are extremely shy and sensitive and tend to have a nervous temperament a lot of the time, this makes it harder for them to get used to a different environment or new people. They are on the whole a needy pet and get their name from their Meezer' which is the nickname for the high pitched cry they have, they love attention, but are very playful and active.

There are a number of different breeds of Siamese cats, some are; the Balinese, these have long hair, their coat varies in a number of colours from blue to chocolate to lilac. Colourpoint shorthaired, these are cross bred with other cats along with a Siamese cats, they have pointed coat colours (which is where their name comes from), these can be either Lynx points and Tortie points. Another breed is the Himalayan, these are long haired cats that are a cross between Persians to Siamese, in some cases pointed domestic longhaired cats were used to form point markings on their coat and also to develop chocolate or lilac coats.
